Students in Bossier Parish will soon have an interactive tool that will allow them to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and Cyber careers, develop new technical skills, and better answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Through a partnership between the Cyber Innovation Center and LifeJourney™, Bossier Parish Schools will begin piloting LifeJourney™ for students this semester with full implementation and roll out in the fall.
LifeJourney™ is an interactive, online experience for schools that empowers students to test drive future STEM careers and learn directly from top industry professionals. Through this virtual interaction, students are able to explore a variety of professions along the pathway of their choice. Teachers, in turn, are able to help make course choices that lead students along their chosen pathways. In progressing through what is called LifeJourney™ Career Ideation, students are introduced to a range of STEM/Cyber careers through videos, interactive question and answers, and skill building experiences called “field trips.” Activities are guided by industry mentors working in today’s exciting STEM fields and are designed to make classroom activities engaging and relevant.
“In today’s world, students need more than a database of career information,” says George Neron, Vice President of Education and Mentorship for LifeJourney™. “They need a way to explore their future, learn from mentors working in the field, and start understanding their own true passions.”
Thirty teachers, representing many of the Bossier Parish middle schools, took part in an initial LifeJourney™ training on Monday, January 5, 2015. This training introduced teachers to the LifeJourney™ Career Ideation platform, which allows them to give students access to their own interactive dashboard, follow students’ progress, and understand students’ personal career preferences and inclinations. Additional training will be provided this semester to offer Bossier Parish teachers techniques, lesson plans, and evaluation metrics for seamless integration in to the classroom.
“This is a great resource for teachers! Through the experience, teachers can show real application for what is being taught in the classroom,” says G.B. Cazes, Vice President of the Cyber Innovation Center. “LifeJourney™ empowers teachers and integrates with our existing STEM/Cyber initiatives. At the end of the day, every teacher is a career counselor.”
