Staff Pick: Summertime According to NICERC

This post comes from NICERC Director of Academic Outreach Kevin Nolten

Am I the only one that has little jingles pop into their head? Jingles based on the current mood or emotion? Today for instance, I had two come to mind… One came from the Beachboys, “Sum sum summer time, sum sum summer time” and the other, a little heavier, by Ozzy, “Schools out for summer.” Maybe I’m the only one, but I know I’m not the only one who has summer on their mind!

The term ‘summer’ comes with a slightly different meaning to us at NICERC. Instead of rest and relaxation, we ramp up professional development opportunities for you! This summer, we’ll host two national conferences in two cities – our Education Discovery Forums (EDF) – with hundreds of teachers attending. In my role at NICERC, I don’t often interact one-on-one with the teachers throughout the year like my colleagues. So needless to say, the EDF and summertime is my favorite part of the NICERC year!

For those who don’t know about the EDF, it is a multi-day professional development event for middle school and high school teachers where they receive training on how to integrate cyber into the classroom while connecting students to real-world opportunities and developing 21st century skills.

Don’t let budget constraints be the reason you do not join us this summer. We have doubled the number of scholarships and travel grants available to K-12 educators this year! Not to mention, every teacher who attends will walk away with some technology- whether that’s a micro:bit, Boe-Bot, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi. Let’s call it Christmas in June AND July!

As you wind down the year, I want to say CONGRATULATIONS and WAY TO GO! You’ve successfully brightened the minds of your students and have prepared them for the next chapter in their lives. I hope your summer is filled with rest, relaxation, and professional development!
