Students are part of a research development team that has been assigned to create a program used to unlock a safe that holds confidential documents. The safe will be programmed to unlock only when certain musical notes are played simultaneously. Each student will build a pan flute that will be one of the keys to unlock the safe. Using the engineering design process, students will research concepts of sound waves, frequency, and vibrations and apply their knowledge to design and build pan flutes. This kit contains enough materials for 10 groups. Access to curricula materials can be found at http://www.nicerc.org.
Materials in this kit include: vinyl tubing, hook and loop fasteners, modeling clay, plastic straws, string, foam cups, masking tape, and permanent markers.
Students will design a vessel around an egg that represents the protective gear a stunt-person may wear when jumping from a building. Explore topics on gravity, velocity, Newton’s Laws of Motion, mass, weight, force, and acceleration.
